Why We Test Every Batch: Transparency in an Unregulated Industry

The Problem With Trust

Here is the uncomfortable truth about the mushroom edibles industry: there are very few rules, and even fewer brands following them.

Walk into any smoke shop and you will find dozens of mushroom gummy and chocolate brands on the shelf. Most have flashy packaging. Most make bold claims. And most cannot show you a single lab report proving what is actually inside.

That is not an exaggeration — it is the reality of an industry growing faster than regulation can keep up. And the people paying the price are consumers who have no way to verify what they are putting in their body.

At Sacred Journey, we decided early on that transparency would not be a marketing bullet point. It would be the foundation of everything we do.

What Is a Certificate of Analysis?

A Certificate of Analysis — or COA — is a document produced by an independent, third-party laboratory that verifies the contents of a product. It is the only objective proof of what is in the package.

A proper COA tests for:

  • Potency — Does the product contain what the label says? Is each gummy or chocolate square dosed accurately?
  • Contaminants — Are there pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, or microbial contamination?
  • Consistency — Does the product match the stated concentration across the entire batch, not just one sample?

When a brand publishes their COAs, they are inviting you to verify their claims. When they do not, they are asking you to take their word for it. In an unregulated industry, we think that is too much to ask.

How to Read a Lab Report

Lab reports can look intimidating — rows of numbers, acronyms, and scientific notation. But the important information is simpler than it appears:

1. Check the lab. Is it an ISO-certified, independent lab? Or an in-house test? Third-party is the only kind that counts.

2. Check the date. Lab reports should be recent and tied to a specific batch. A single report from two years ago covering "all products" is a red flag.

3. Check potency results. The active compound levels should match what the label promises. If the label says 500mg per serving and the lab report says 200mg, that is a problem.

4. Check contaminant panels. Look for "ND" (Not Detected) across pesticide, heavy metal, and microbial panels. Any detected contaminants should be well below safety thresholds.

5. Check the QR code. Many legitimate COAs include a QR code or verification link that lets you confirm the document directly with the lab. If a brand's COA cannot be independently verified, treat it with skepticism.

Why Most Brands Skip Testing

Third-party lab testing is expensive. A full panel COA for a single batch can cost hundreds of dollars, and when you are testing every batch of every product, those costs add up fast.

For brands competing on price — pumping out the cheapest possible product to fill smoke shop shelves — lab testing is an expense that cuts directly into razor-thin margins. So they skip it. Or they test one batch and use that report for everything. Or they create fake reports. All of this happens more often than the industry wants to admit.

We absorb the cost of testing because we believe it is not optional. You deserve to know what you are consuming, and we would rather earn less per unit than compromise on that standard.

What We Think the Industry Needs

We are not here to tear down other brands. We are here to set a standard and hope others follow. Here is what we think every mushroom edible brand should commit to:

  1. Publish every COA. Not on request — on your website, linked to each product, accessible to anyone.
  2. Test every batch. Not one sample from six months ago. Every production run, independently verified.
  3. Use ISO-certified labs. Not in-house testing. Not your friend with a chemistry degree. An accredited, independent laboratory.
  4. Be honest about what is inside. No proprietary blends. No vague dosing. No hiding behind marketing language.

The brands that do this will earn long-term loyalty. The brands that do not will eventually be exposed by an increasingly educated consumer base.
